| Your Personal Biography |
One of four children, John Girouard grew up in a Franco-American household speaking French as his first language. Girouard’s father was a career National Guardsman and the family moved periodically before settling in the town of Auburn, Maine. With his Acadian roots Girouard was planted in English speaking schools and struggled with the rhythm and academia of the public institution.
During his youth, Girouard relished the outdoors and frequent camping, hiking, fishing and hunting adventures nourished his being. He found an energy and wisdom in the natural world that words and representational images could not convey. Girouard’s experience with abstract art was much like his experience with the Mother Nature. Abstract art took him deeper into his being then other media had been able to move him. He has long felt the connection between the wilderness, spirituality and his work as an artist.
Girouard is a self-taught artist whose journey into the art world began outside conventional paths. While working as a bread baker in Maine, he was given the opportunity to pursue art more rigorously and immersed himself into the study of mixed media on canvas. He developed an appreciation for the power of color and refined a sensitive handling of his patented mixed media. Now his experiences are transformed onto canvases and into vibrant and energetic abstractions. The elements of Girouard’s compositions include layered glazes, rich colors, gestural strokes, and an atmospheric sense of light and depth.
