Artist Statement:
John Nolan was born in 1958, in Dublin, Ireland.His exuberant modern figurative style combines bold outlines with bright exotic colours. His interpretation of various motifs ( Fish, Landscape, Flowers, Birds,Human Figure,Still Life,Trees) transmits a positive upbeat feeling to his viewers.
Along side this exploration John has been developing his abstract style, for many years. In the abstract work he experiments with colour through gestural brushstrokes. There is no discernable subject matter, he has abandoned the motifs of his modern figurative work and focuses on pure colour and composition. Basically it is the artist, the canvas, the colour and the brush. His palette is still as vibrant as ever, using exuberant and exotic colours. He starts a painting with no definite preconceptions but simply an impulse, a subliminal thought about colour, space or form. He pushes beyond realism to build images that have power and urgency. It is a journey attempting to understand himself and existence, to give through his painting definition to the essence of being in the universe. In my work I explore colour . I focus on pure colour and composition. Basically it is the artist, the canvas , the colour and the brush. I push beyond realism to build images that have urgency and power. It is a journey attempting to understand myself and existence, to give through my painting definition to the essence of being in the universe. My need to create Art is as strong as anyones need to live. My paintings are charged with masses of energy which cause the surface to move in vibrant harmony. The inner pulse that guides my work dictates my longing for colour and forms, and explores my imagination and inner experience.
