Artist Statement:
Each piece is hand thrown on a potter’s wheel. I pay particular attention to the way a vessel flows – forming fine shapes and fluid lines. I stretch the limits of the clay and my imagination especially when creating larger scale pieces. After a piece has been formed and has dried to the right consistency I incise, carve and/or add colored porcelain to create a dimensional scene that flows around the vessel. When it comes to glazing I use under glazes, engobes, mason stains, glazes, over glazes and enamels. Many of the glazes I use I have formulated myself. I only use high quality materials. The clays I use consist of porcelain or a special mix that resembles porcelain and stoneware. All are high fire clays (2232°F - 2345°). All pieces are a unique piece of art – one of a kind and signed....

| Your Personal Biography |
John was introduced to ceramic art in his first year of high school at East Brunswick High School in New Jersey. He knew right away this was what he wanted to do. Primarily self-taught, John studied every aspect of the art - from building his own wheels and kilns, to the chemistry of the clay and glazes. He has more than 30 years invested in his knowledge and ability of ceramic art. Presently, throwing on the wheel and sculpting are his primary forms.
John tends to have an Asian influence in his pieces, elegant flowing lines, gentle shapes and fine detail. Nature is also shown in his work, many pieces have the beauty of our area reflected in the decoration.
John looks at a vessel as if it is a circular canvas. Therefore much of his work is not just a hand thrown vessel, but a “painting” in clay surrounding the piece. Not only are they “painted” with glazes, but incised to form texture and add depth. Dimensional canvases of expression is one way to describe the artwork of John O’Brien. Whether it is a graceful vase or a sculpture making a statement he is always pushing the limitations of the medium. John works mainly with porcelain, stoneware and premium porcelain mixes, which beautifully compliment his exquisite vessels and imaginative sculptures.
