Artist Statement for Judy Rey Wasserman

I use the Hebrew letters from Bible texts for every single stroke in a painting.

The letters symbolize the smallest pre-particles, called waves or membranes in cutting edge physics. Physicists theorize (and agree) that there are 11 of these membranes in our universe and 11 corresponding ones in alternate ones, Thus, 22. There have always been 22 basic Hebrew letters.

The theology that the words of God spoken in Hebrew created the world is held by all the Judeo-Christian faiths, The theology that those Hebrew letters are the building blocks or physical reality is also held by all Judeo-Christian faiths and denominations, It is mentioned in the Talmud and Kabbalah, and is something Moses, David, Jesus and the disciples all certainly knew. It is that basic.

I work to depict what we don't see - the underlying reality of the universe, which is both physical and scientific, yet has a spiritual genesis.

Until now art has been more about what is depicted than how it is depicted.

My work is about the how. It’s about the strokes, more than what the image is that the strokes combine to simulate. I call this new way of painting, UnGraven Image. I am founding a new art movemnt and I encourage interested artists to contact me.

UnGraven Image uses the Hebrew letters from original Bible texts and prayers for every stroke in a painting.

These letters symbolize the essential and smallest pre-particles, which physicists call membranes, wave-like motions or strings. Currently physicists agree there are 11 of these membranes in our universe, plus 11 “opposite” membranes in alternate universes. There have always been 22 basic Hebrew letters.

When the Creator says, “Let there be light…” our physical universe is created. That it is Hebrew that the Lord speaks and that the Hebrew letters symbolically represent what is most essential to our physical universe is theology that is held by all branches and denominations of Judaism and Christianity, plus, apparently it is also held by Muslims. For the Abramic faiths we are walking in – actually surrounded by the very words of God, always.

Every stroke is a Hebrew letter, which comes from specific texts, chosen specifically for that painting. For instance, in Shema Dalet, a small work, which depicts a sunrise, the strokes are all from Deut. 6:4 also known as the Shema. Jews say the Shema morning and evening, so I usually use it when I am painting a sunrise or sunset in a painting. In Psalm 69 (Seagull) all of the strokes are from the words of that psalm. Check out that psalm to discover why I chose it!

I copy the letters from the actual biblical texts. I use the kind of font used for printed works, those found on scrolls and Torahs, not the common one used for handwriting.

I always enjoy it when viewers get up very close, or try to use their eyeglasses like magnifying glasses to see if they can find a Hebrew letter in one of my paintings, because here and there, one "peeks' out from the jumble of waves, motions and lines of thy many layers.

My slogan is, “Changing the way we see the world one picture at a time.”
