Artist Statement for Jyoti Thomas

I feel passionate about creating in many different forms and mediums but I’m predominantly a painter. My art comes from my inner world giving a voice to thoughts and emotions that can’t always be adequately expressed in other ways. I am always in awe of the deep power of creativity to heal and bring deep insight.
Most of my works are rich in colour and symbols and are an emotional and soul felt interpretation of the world in and around me. The works shown here are from several bodies of work those being Meet Anita, Gifts of Descent, Below the Surface, Fragments and Oceans of Choice.
My artwork has been a constantly changing river of works following the journey of my life, through good times and difficult times and has always been a refuge and a deep love. While the artwork just IS in its own right I also hope that it taps into others experiences of life and links us together in our common humanity.
I love art just for its own sake and nothing else in my world has the ability to lift my heart and soul like making art does. I can go down to my art space feeling low or flat in mood and within half an hour my whole spirit has lifted and I feel the passion of what I am working on. My inner world or the world of the unconcious has an opening to express itself and it is such a relief and such a joy to find that space. Its a world beyond words.
I often find it hard to title works because its like words don't really fit in this realm and can't adequately express what I have painted. Occasionally its different and words may be there but usually that's how it is for me.
Some of my work in my daily life is as an Art Therapist and I aim to help people to learn the power of their own creativity for growth, empowerment and deep healing. Over the years I have worked with women who have experienced domestic violence or abuse as well as those who are struggling with depression and young people living with disabilities. Lately I mainly work with groups, running workshops and run a regular group for people who struggle with depression or who are going through difficult life transitions. I also occasionally work with individuals. I have a seperate website with info about this work if you want to know more:
www.creativeconnection.vpweb.com.au
From a purely art perspective I run workshops for anyone wanting to explore art as a tool for growth and healing and to deepen their experience of life. I have done several community arts projects with both Adults and children which I find great fun and brings me back to the basic straight enjoyment of making art. It reminds me that art is good for us no matter what it is labelled as. The act of simply making art is such a healthy, healing and enjoyable outlet.
