Artist Statement:
All of my artwork is depicting light and shadow at extreme's, through intense color and high contrast. My subject matter come's from different places within myself and my interactions with the world and nature. I love to paint portraits, so you will find faces from the past as well as people who are in my life now. Recently, I have been abstracting portraits of animals, with the idea to render animal spirits. My animal spirits live within a memory landscape. Here my memory landscape is not painted from reality, but from my imagination and usually use a palatte knife to attain the surreal surface. Many times in these memory landscapes I will have stencils of my hand prints, these are a symbol of prayers. I chose to paint animals in nature to show my concern for the environment. Human's impact on this earth is causing catastrophic change. The animals are feeling these changes first, we need to see this extinction and realize that this is our fate too, if we don't change. My goal is for my compositions to jump out at the viewer, with the eyes of the spirit animals telling you to pay attention....

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
The metaphysical world which interacts through spirits with nature, and ourselves. Travelling around the world has always inspired and given me a plethora of landscapes to work from. My indigenous heritage has given me much to draw from, with the legends and myths of tribes here in the Pacific Northwest. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I have been an artist since I was a small child. Both of my parents are artists, and since I could pick up a crayon my mom had an art studio for me. Drawing is the most natural thing in the world for me to do. It is like how I breathe and walk around. |

| Your Personal Biography |
Kaila (Ka-ee-la), is a Klamath Indian word for the mythological character who created the earth. Kaila also means the world, the land and creation. I was born in Ashland, Oregon in 1982 and grew up in Eugene until I was 13 when we moved to Wiesbaden, Germany for four year with my family. I am a Klamath tribal member and now live in Portland, Oregon. I am an artist who works with a variety of mixed medium including oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint, pastels, intaglio, monotype printing, pencil and ink. I graduated with a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2004, and received a full Dorothy Lemelson Scholarship all four years. During this time I travelled and studied in Cortona, Italy and Santorini, Greece. My periodic travels have continued here in the U.S. as well as thoughout much of Central and South America. In addition to my art and travels, I have worked as an environmental activist and fundraiser for various state and national organizations out of Portland, Oregon.
My compositional themes are varied. I have produced different series of portraits, landscapes, old world stone alleyways, spirit birds, animals and salmon. My travels and personal reflections continually inspire new themes. My work has been described as psychological, surreal, archetypal, and impressionistic. As an artist, I have been described as having good command of the human form, a strong compositional style, and a superb colorist. |
