Cornelis (Kees) van Eyck
Kees van Eyck was born in the sign of Aquarius on the 26 January, 1951 in Utrecht, Holland as one of five children. His family roots can be traced into the distant history and as far as to the town of Maaseik in Belgium, the birthplace of famous painters Jan and Hubert van Eyck. Therefore, it is not surprising that artistic talent has been displayed in a number of family members in different generations.
After finishing primary and secondary school in Utrecht, Kees van Eyck pursued his studies at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Hertogenbosch, in the Department of Graphic Design and Painting.
Works of art
Kees van Eyck's works of art express his realistic perception of the world, traditional in Dutch painting. However, the source of the artist's inspiration can also be found in European surrealism and American hyperrealism and photorealism. The influence of these styles can be seen in his realistic visual expression of the world demonstrated in his art since the end of the 70s (of the previous century) up to now.
In his collection »Portraits of icons of the post-war period of the 20th century« Mr van Eyck has introduced the iconography of our era. The portraits of famous people are remarkable characterizations of movie- stars, media personalities, and inspirational individuals from the world of music, art, politics, and philosophy. With these portraits the author has paid tribute to individuals with extraordinary gifts and talents, who have influenced the development of mankind and left their mark on the previous century in different fields.
The collection »Extra-ordinary birds« is the result of the author's adoration of the nature. During his long hikes in Slovenia and elsewhere the artist's attention has often been caught by birds. Birds represent the very essence of freedom and the limitless nature of the human spirit yearning for infinity. Birds also warn and remind us of the environmental changes which are the result of rampant consumerism. The artist sees birds as long-time friends to the human population.
The landscapes were created in the same spirit of close inter-action with nature. Van Eyck's landscapes depict various environments, ranging from the river landscapes of his native Holland to foreign places, which the author has seen sometime in his life, either in reality or in his dreams. The variety of landscapes is typically focused on water – from sea shores to river banks – thus revealing the artist's close relationship with water as the source of life.
In the early period of his creative years Kees van Eyck and his friend Frits Schöne, a writer and poet, produced a book entitled »The Dead Thunderstorm«. The story, which targets adult readers, is a kind of travelogue complemented by beautiful illustrations. The main character is a girl who travels around the world and meets various cultures on the way: American Indians, Aborigines, Eskimos, and some other peoples living on the brink of civilization. Mr van Eyck's illustrations from the book have been exhibited individually several times.
The two friends have also created a project entitled »The 51 Panels«. Mr Schöne's haiku poems are complemented by fifty-one black-and-white illustrations by Mr van Eyck. The inspiration for this collection was triggered off during their long cycling journey across Hungary in the mid-eighties.
Kees van Eyck's perception of the world is often expressed in a surrealistic manner, revealing his realistic and dream world in the same image. His attitude towards our environment is charged with criticism as well as hope for a better future. His paintings aspire to evoke the feelings of beauty as well as to raise the awareness of burning issues in today's world.
