Artist Statement:
Figurative sculpture and architectural wall relief.
I want to show an object and what the object is about, tell a story, give it context. I started making clay perhaps because it was so definite, even literal. It can’t be reduced beyond what it is, as a painting can be described simply as a flat planar field. A sculpture is a formal object described by that form, it is rough or smooth, flat or round, soft or hard, shiny or dull. It is honest.
I alternate between abstract and architectural pieces and more detailed figurative and narrative works. I’m comfortable with the combination and will see what happens as my work develops, but I don’t see the need to focus on or eliminate one or the other or even to combine them.
My work basically comes from and is about imagination. I would be a painter in that a lot of my subject matter is painterly, but because my medium is clay, I am a sculptor. My work is sometimes more abstractly formal, but it’s still a lot about image and narrative.
I want to tell stories but am a terribly poor verbal storyteller. But sometimes things ...
