ARTIST'S STATEMENT
As an artist, technical skill has has held little importance for me. Although I put myself through the same rigors of academic study as any art student, I did it on my own. I am entirely self-taught. In my journey through expressionism and traditionism, I began to define my artistic style and philosophy. I have chosen primarily abstract expression because I believe it allows individual viewers to reach inside themselves for their own inner response to the work. It affords me the opportunity to create an emotional response without being specific.
My approach to art is philosophical rather than cerebral. I consider it a process of self-transformation. An image exists within my soul which must be expressed. I allow an opening within myself through which the image may move from my soul to my mind for expression. In development, the art goes through considerable change. Where the work starts is totally different from where it will end.
It is the transformation that occurs through the process of painting and viewing the work, more than the end result of my work, which I love.
