My current work deals with the settings, the dress, the accoutrements, and the gestures that signify a desirable life, and the participation of people who activate these elements as a form of ritual. It's about the potential for excess and the details that make it proper; the artifice and drama that make ordinary things magical.
My imagery is derived from the motion pictures of the 1930s and 40s. They align with the concept of artifice in their opulence and escapist themes. The paintings are about the fleeting, the missing, and the unattainable. As paintings however, they become things that may be attained. There is both the sense of distance in time, coupled with the immediacy of the new, as these concepts and images are reintroduced into our contemporary consciousness....
