These are all words which has relevance to my practice. A reoccurring theme in my work is patterns and geometrical shapes in combination with recognizable figures and abstraction. There is an interesting dialouge which form when these meet and you can say I kind of make my own chaos which I then try to structure, organize? Colour is important, working with different colour combinations and exploring colour for its own properties and intrinsic value play a big role in my working practice. I work both intuitively letting the painting evolve whilst working, using different ways of applying the paint to get the right expression, as well as adding carefully planned structures, patterns and elements deriving from photografic images.

Biography Alexandra Severinsson
Alexandra was born in 1971 in Varberg, a small coastal town in the south west of Sweden. Her mother is a textile designer and father ́s a builder/carpenter. Since being surrounded by creativity from an early age it came quite natural for her to study art. In high school Alexandra had photography on the schedule and this has ever since been important to her work, sometimes as a direct part included in the painting, and sometimes as a starting point, an inspiration to a painting. After high school she worked for a couple of years before commencing her formal visual arts education at KV- art school in Gothenburg, followed by two years printmaking education at the renowned Hovedskous Visual arts school, also in Gothenburg. During this period she worked foremost with woodcuts and experimental techniques such as collography. Her favorite artist and biggest source of inspiration at this time was the German artist George Bazelits and especially his monumental woodcuts. Alexandra says that she always liked the tangible qualities of the printmaking techniques. Like the coarseness of the woodcuts cut out of massive plywood boards and the imprint in the paper an etching makes. She also liked the element of surprise and experimentation. In 1995 she went to Paris to study the experimental technique of viscosity printmaking at S.W. Hayter ́s printmaking studio also known as Atelier 17. Viscosity printmaking is a technique where you etch different depths in a single copperplate, then by using different viscosity of the ink on hard and soft rolls to transfer the ink to the plate you achieve a multicolored print with a very special look.
This period in Paris was a very interesting and educational period both artistically and personal for Alexandra. She decided to continue her art education abroad and applied to an MA in Fine Art at Winchester School of art that took place first in Barcelona for the main part and finished off in Winchester.
During her MA in Barcelona 1996-97, Alexandra started painting monumental minimalistic paintings, using only one or a few colours, experimenting with structure and 3-dimensional patterns. This is when circles appeared in her work like spots made of PVA glue or black glitter spots. As in the painting called “Salt” from 1997 where she used gloss household paint and glitter.
In recent works the glitter spots can still be seen but now in combination with both figurative and abstract painting. She also worked with odd materials such as iron plates and magnets or as in the painting “Agua Potable” where she used wooden blocks glued on to a round board and painted with metallic spray paint.
After her Degree she stayed in London for a few years working with her art and also having other employments alongside, for example as a printmaking tutor on a Foundation in Art and Design course. She decided to move back to Sweden in 2001 where she for awhile worked in a craft shop and also made handmade gift cards and fashion jeweler. She later had reoccurring jobs as a visiting lecturer and tutor in Art projects at the Textile University in Borås.
In 2002 she met her future husband and almost at the same time had an accident that put her career on hold for a while. During her time confined to her home she started working more with illustrations and with digital images using the computer to make drawings and started integrating photography more and more. She did some web illustration work and also a book cover for a dissertation.
In 2004 she had her daughter Elvira and it was first in 2007 after being a “stay at home mum” and spending time renovating the family ́s house which they moved in to in 2006 that she had the time and inspiration to start painting again. In 2008 she had her first solo exhibition in Gothenburg at Gallery Anna H. The exhibition was a success and the Region of “Västra Götaland” who purchases and commission art for this region bought plenty of work.
Alexandra now works full time with her art and have recently moved her studio from the family ́s house to a bigger space close by. |
