Artist Statement:
Linda Bussell grew up in San Diego and has lived in Southern California for most of her life, with the exception of several years spent in Hawaii. She earned her BFA in Painting from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. As a painter, she works primarily in oils and mixed media. In recent years she has become fascinated with the encaustic medium because of the texture and translucency that it affords. Her subject matter ranges from non-representational to abstracted organic forms, intimate landscape motifs, garden elements, interiors, and the humble beauty of everyday objects.
Some recent work has focused on small, natural souvenirs such as seed pods, bones, and shells. A key focus in these works is on the beauty and intriguing complexity of the small, ordinary, and often overlooked, which inspire reflections on life, passage of time, rebirth, hope, continuity, and adaptation.
"While I sometimes work alla prima for studies, a more typical approach is to build up layers of paint that alternately obscure and reveal underlying layers.
