Artist Statement:
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In this recent body of work I have chosen to explore the natural environment that seems to dwell in our periphery. I have also begun to experiment using different materials while looking at the rural areas that abound in North America.
The Hay Bale Series
In this series of paintings I used bold and vibrant colours on routered and gouged plywood with attached fence posts and cattle wire. I am attempting to bring attention to the bales because of their seemingly awkward placement in the flat fields off of our county roads. We tend to drive through, around, or by the beauty that lays out of our car window every day with very little time for thought. The hay bale seems strange because it comes directly from the environment but has been manipulated to appear near alien to it. Patterson Ewen’s gouged paintings of subjects such as the moon or the sun had a great influence on this series of paintings.

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
Inspiration occurs to me everyday. I try to stay lucid and receptive to as much around me as possible without getting overwhelmed.
The first time that I saw a vanGogh painting in a gallery it really shook me. The colours and the thick application of paint was very powerful.
I am still inspired by new artists. There are so many fantastically creative people in our midst. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
Being an artist is not easy. If I had had a choice in the matter I would have selected something else. I have always been interested in the visual arts. Recently I went back and read some of my mother's albums of me growing up. I had found that even in kindergarten I had written that I wanted to be an artist. It is just something that has been there, and only when I grew up did I try to make it my living and not only my reason for living. |
