Artist Statement:





I believe that painting and
drawing are visceral forms of
communication and they are my
first language. Making art
requires me to be willing to
take risks, to ask questions,
to explore the unknown. The
more I paint the more I yearn
for greater fluency with this
language.

These paintings come from
living close to the land. I am
fascinated by the changing
landscape, not only the
effects of seasons and weather
but human interactions with
the natural world. We shape
it and change the plants
creating great swaths of a
single color, we abandon it,
reclaim it: we change its
purpose to fit our desires.
Each painting or drawing
becomes a record of my
reaction to a moment recently
observed in our environment.
Hillsides devoured by man or
beast; the close observation
of a fallen branch, the
effects of time and climate
that may or may not be in our
hands.

The long rectangle and the
diptych have evolved into my
chosen painting format. The
artificial divide created by
the diptych began for me as a
metaphor for our ever-present
signature on our surroundings.
Over time the tension created
by the divide has become an

I believe that painting and drawing are visceral forms of communication and they are my first language. Making art requires me to be willing to take risks, to ask questions, to explore the unknown. The more I paint the more I yearn for greater fluency with this language.

These paintings come from living close to the land. I am fascinated by the changing landscape, not only the effects of seasons and weather but human interactions with the natural world. We shape it and change the plants creating great swaths of a single color, we abandon it, reclaim it: we change its purpose to fit our desires. Each painting or drawing becomes a record of my reaction to a moment recently observed in our environment.
