Artist Statement for Nina Gabriel

Nina Gabriel Artist’s Statement

“May our walking on Earth be gentle as the Union of a Butterfly and a Flower”
Traditional Buddhist Blessing

Rainbows are the same all over the world, and, they are the same at any time we look at them. Our perception of them is, however is different every time we see them and it is ever – changing, according to our mood, feelings and state of mind.
My earliest recollection and recognition of rainbows goes back to when I was a little girl, sitting beside my grandfather, at his famous desk where he used to make amazingly interesting and beautiful things. At the same time, he taught my brother and me the colors of the rainbow and that is where it all began – my love for beauty, color and art for things of beauty and for things that were left for us to interpret.
I felt connected to nature and its boundless beauty since my childhood. I also enjoyed making things – of clay or any other media. My grandfather taught us many of those techniques and approaches to expression. From my grandmother, I learned crochet, embroidery and some sewing. Later on, I learned to work with many different media, which I enjoy to this day.
“So far only art is still born out of the activity of the living spirit, out of the intuitive perception. Art alone has had a natural and therefore a normal and healthy origin and development. The spirit, however, does not express itself in the intellect, but in the intuitive perception, and only manifests in what is called deep inner feeling.”
Abd – ru-shin- Oskar Esnest Bernhardt
The process of making a thing of beauty through connection with my inner self is the greatest meditation and a gift that I appreciate so much. The ideas and possibilities are endless. Life and nature offer me inspiration and feelings that provide basis for many of my works. Working with that kind of art allows me to connect with nature and the universe. At this stage of my life, the colors of the rainbows become more prominent. I have experienced these colors in both sweet and bitter ways through the many events and circumstances in my life including the color black due to the very unfortunate events and the losses of the people I loved dearly- my parents and my brother Grant/Reli - the one I cherished the most all my life (all of whom I lost within 11 months 2006-07)
My art represents many philosophies, combining my deep interest in different cultures, beliefs, art, design, poetry, music and many other forms of expression. I strive to understand the ideas behind them, the spirituality and the soul. Many is the time when I bring several ideas into one work, be that a collage or some other form.

To produce art is the most satisfying experience for me and the results of my work I would like to share with as many people as possible thus spreading my spirit far and wide.
My art has contributed enormously to my own spiritual growth, at the same time testing my patience, persistence and will. It has brought me curiosity, hope and faith.
It is my sincere wish that my art and poetry bring peace, happiness and joy to anyone that appreciates it. I also hope that it will bring forth many positive feelings such as love, faith, confidence and truly all the good that life has to offer.

“I am convinced that any attempt to restore harmony in the world can only rest on the renewal of personal responsibility.”
Andrei Tarkovsky

Since my early childhood I was instilled with wisdom from my dear grandfather, who taught me to choose peace instead of a fight or destruction; to find peace in my heart and be compassionate towards my fellow human beings, nature and animals.
I was taught to create beauty in the midst of adversities and struggles facing my family and life in general. I have followed his teachings incorporating the teachings of many spiritual leaders and knowledge that I have acquired throughout my education, reading and search for truth and meaning of life. I strongly believe in Love, Harmony and Peace that can only stem from our heats and resonate outwardly creating the same all around us and in the world. To spread this message is my contribution to humanity, as I have been led to, having gone to great depths into my soul through my art, poetry and writings. Encountering many struggles and numerous obstacles, I was still able to get where I am today, as an artist, poet and designer and follow my dream and came to this understanding, knowledge and wisdom that I would like to share with the world - to help and assist others on their own journeys of life towards peace and harmony on earth, and provide means to help follow their dreams.
“We heal our hearts with rays of love and forgiveness, appreciating beauty within all things and most of all within ourselves, celebrating our existence by creating our own forms of beauty and illuminated by our soul’s light we become beautiful beings with great love in our hearts.”
Nina Gabriel
P.S. By all means I never claim to have grown fully spiritually nor have I arrived to a place of total bliss. Especially when life has presented the most difficult challenges in my life, such as loosing my brother and my parents within 11 months in2006-07, when I tried exceptionally hard to find my center and faith once again. The Bliss that I experience is only when I create art, write poetry or assist with healing and do charitable works, and as far as my spiritual journey it is a Journey not a destination.
“First they will ignore you,
Then they will laugh at you,
Then they will fight you,
Then you will win.”
Mahatma Gandhi

I have a dream and purpose in life to make a difference in children’s life's, making their dreams come true and to be able to create happiness and joy in their life's, to provide for less fortunate for their education and healing. I dedicate my work to this purpose in the loving memory of my brother Grant/Reli. Leli's & Reli's Foundation Making a difference as two parts of One, helping children of the World.

I am infinitely grateful for my grandparents, parents and especially my brother who have assisted me enormously on this journey and the years that have lived with all of them.

Finally I am humbled and grateful to God/Universe for enriching my life with such gifts of beauty and healing, because when I create and heal as well as get healed, I know it is not me, but some other energies that work through me, I am only a humble servant working for the greatest good.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.”

St. Francis of Assisi
