Artist Statement:
Through self-reflection, intuition, and much research I have come to incorporate Metaphysics, Alchemy, Eastern/African and Tribal Cultures, Contemporary Psychology, and Kabbalah into my paintings in order to derive specific imagery such as exotic moth wing patterns, archetypes & archaic symbol(evil eye, mandala, triangle etc.), color and camouflage in order to draw from my own subconscious and importantly the viewer’s as well. | Your Personal Biography |
Liana Grammenos is an artist who is a nomad by nature. She was born in Cleveland, OH. and raised between the United States and Greece. As an adult her travels and relocations that span North America and Europe have given her a unique perspective and eclectic flare in her artwork. Liana is primarily an abstract painter. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and her MA in Fine Art from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London UK. She has also studied at such prestigious art schools as Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY, the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland OH, and the Glassell School of Art in Houston TX. Liana has been heavily influenced by Spanish modern art due to her previous residence in Madrid, Spain and prior residence in Athens, Greece that has given her an even more in depth knowledge of Greek art and architecture which has influenced her all her life due to her Greek heritage. She is also influenced heavily by Japanese art, the Art Nouveau movement, the Surrealist movement, the Abstract Expressionists, the contemporary Pop Surrealist movement and specifically artists such as Peter Doig, Bernard Frieze, Wassily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, Joan Miro, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Chris Ofili, Fiona Rae, Paul Henry Ramirez, Mark Rothko, Anri Sala, and Fred Tomaselli. Liana's spiritual and metaphysical beliefs as well as her personal experiences and interpretation of life, aid her in creating intense atmospheres, vibrant color, and melodic movement all conveyed in her work in a unique and profound manner.
