Artist Statement:
My figurative paintings are representative of spontaneous moments in time. The figure presents not only a joyful challenge for me as a painter, but as the pinnacle aesthetic of creation it is also filled with meaning.
I paint in oil with a heavy emphasis on values and composition. I start
with thin washes gradually building form and light with thicker layers
of paint. This direct painting process reflects the immediacy with which
life is experienced. While utilizing formal elements of picture making,
the figures retain a spontaneous, natural air. The painting technique
used brings attention to the figure which demonstrates it's importance
without neglecting the surroundings and their impact.
For me, the process of oil painting is just another way to focus on
what's important and discover the larger meaning in the little things....

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
My husband is my biggest inspiration. He is an industrial designer and I'm fascinated by his work. He is also one of my favorite subjects to paint. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I can't remember 'becoming an artist' - it's just something I've always done.
However, there was a moment when I decided to pursue fine art as a profession. It was a teacher I heard talking in another class - it was an incredible artistic lecture and demo. After hearing his descriptions of light and shadow the relationships of color and their relativity and many other things I switched into his class and have been studying with him now for over four years. It was back in that first class with Tomutsu Takashima that I fell in love with painting. I'm as passionate about it today as I was then. |
