Artist Statement:
I paint in oils using a contemporary impressionistic style. I specialize in natural landscapes; however I also paint urban landscapes and still life subjects.
I take a lot of my inspiration from nature, from the feelings of grandeur that move me when I’m exploring a wilderness or a green space closer to home. I am also inspired by other artists, living or dead, famous or unknown. I am drawn in particular to the works of Canada’s Tom Thomson and William Heaton Cooper from my native UK.
My aim in each work is to engage the viewer through the use of composition and choice of subject. My style is rich in movement: I believe a painting is imbued with the energy of the artist through the brushwork. I endeavour to capture the quality of light, colour and values of the moment in a creative interpretation. This compels the viewer to explore the piece more fully in order to comprehend it emotionally as well as visually. Hopefully this process enables them to enhance, in some small way, their outlook on the world around them.
