| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I was raised in a culture in which emotional restraint was
praised as a virtue. I was known as being a calm and gentle
girl and the trusted eldest daughter of my family. I had
always repressed my emotions, rarely talked and only showed the soft side of me. Though this was an admirable trait, the result was a
lack of communication skills. I found that talking to other
people was very difficult and often felt as though I was in
a shell or enclosed by unseen walls. Deep inside I have a
desire to break out of this shell and effectively express
myself. In my solo exhibition in Japan, I created
a series of paintings in the butterfly theme, I felt that
the butterfly and I had much in common as they only be able to achieve, their beauty and freedom by breaking out from cocoon. |
