Artist Statement for MALKE

My artist's name is MALKE. Creativity has always been the essence of my life, as an artist, but also as a teacher. Having lived and taught in nine different countries, in Africa, Europe, South and North America, I have always been amazed at the creativity of the cultures I encountered along the way.

I began writing poetry at a very young age in my native Algeria, fascinated that I was by words, languages and cultures. I wanted to see the world. This is what led me to teach abroad. Working in academia has allowed me to find a “little” time to also pursue my other passion: Arts.

An urge to mix bits and pieces that would normally be discarded led me to the concept of ‘collages’, in the tradition of ‘Papiers découpés’ and collages by Matisse, and of 2- and 3D collages by artists of the surrealist movement. Paper was my first medium, putting together and recycling colors and shapes already existing in all kinds of visual material, and creating new rhythms. I soon added feathers, gauze, lace, and plastic. More and more, I have integrated nets of all sorts, as an essential part of my collages, in order to create a feeling of distance between what is shown and the eye of the viewer. My collages combine found and created shapes in new ways to express ineffable yet intensely-felt emotions.

In my 3D collages (perceived by viewers as sculptures, but still ‘collages’ to me), I interact with lines, volumes, structures, and shadows, as I already did with my dolls and puppets 25 years ago. When working with all these ‘layers and fragments’, it feels to me as though I am almost working with organic materials.

Life itself is indeed a collage, made of fragments and layers. The link between artists’ expressions and viewers’ emotions can help ‘seers’ make sense of what happens within themselves and around them. Art can transcend the fragments and layers that all lives are made up of.
