Artist Statement

"As far as I remember, I was always doing art or some kind of handcrafts. My mother, also an artist, indroduced me in a playful way into the world of art and ever since my passion (and sometimes obsession) for the arts has never left.

In my teens, I dedicated my free time to the arts-I spend a lot of time painting with acrylics, doing photography and ceramics. Between the years 1992 and 1998 I traveled a lot. I visited France, Italy, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, Malta, England, Monaco, the Czech Republic and Austria and got a lot of inspiration and ideas out of these trips.

I also chose Fine Arts as a major course in High-School and attended a variety of art courses, workshops and seminars. After High-School and an ecological volunteer year in Cuba I wanted to study fine arts. My decision was influenced by my trip to Cuba, where I had met the Angolan artist Nelson Da Costa (DA'COSTA-http://home.earthlink.net/~nelsondacosta), who became later my husband. Under the guidance of Jesus Carrete, a Cuban artist, he introduced me to a typical Cuban print making technique called Colography. Da Costa also encouraged me to start to paint with oil on canvas.

Being back in Germany, I followed the advice of an art professor at the "Kunsthochschule Weissensee" (Weissensee College of Art) in Berlin and learned first a "bread earning" profession. After two years studying tourism I graduated successfully from a college in Potsdam, Germany.

After I married my husband Nelson Da Costa in Havana in 2001, my life took an unpredictable turn and my plans to study art in Germany were made unpossible. Instead we immigrated to the U.S. and are living in Boston, Massachusetts since the fall of 2002.

I never gave up my dream of becoming a professional artist and enrolled in different expressive art programs, attended oil painting classes at the Boston Center for Adult Education, visited art museums, galleries, went to opening receptions and artist's studios and did more private research at the Boston Public Library.

Since January 2003 I am a full time artist, something I have been dreaming of my whole life. I was also introduced to a new medium-watermixable oil colors, which I am using since.

A general connection between my paintings, whether abstract, realistic, naturalistic, cubistic etc. is one motive: nature. In specific, I am painting landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes, sunsets, flowers and natural patterns.

My artwork reflects my pride, respect and honor for nature (and its preservation!) and it's overwhelming fascinating creations of colors, lights, shades and shapes. My artwork is sometimes dramatic, sometimes relaxing and calm, sometimes it's mystic, sometimes unreal and almost abstract-just like mother earth.

I want to fix and reflect these perfect compositions in my paintings and offer an artistic view to anybody watching and experiencing my art. I want the people to enjoy the healing and relaxing atmosphere and spirit of nature.

My paintings are mainly very vivid and colorful. Long, soft, almost invisible brushstrokes, a photo like canvas surface...
