Artist Statement for Margaret Kosyk

My work is focused primarily on current events. I often get my inspiration from stories in the news that I feel personally connected to. That personal connection usually is psychologically-based rather than externally based. I believe that these events are not something that just happens to other people “out there”.   Recognizing how these events effect our lives and echo our own day to day conflicts is key to finding both inner peace and world peace.   Too often the media bombards us with images and stories that are impossible to make sense of.   People form opinions based on a huge array of facts and information, all which contradict and confuse.  I attempt to bring this information into the realm of art and contemplation, thus giving us a  more solid arena to understand the times in which we live.
Art often stays above the fray of politics, but to dismiss politics is to dismiss life.  I do not consider myself a political artist.  However, I recognize that politics are an integral part of what’s going on in the world, and it is the duty of all artists to interpret the world around us, whether that be the world in our living rooms or the world as a whole.   My work reflects the duality present in that world and I seek to bring together the two conflicting parts, while at the same time focusing on the beauty and the depth created in between.  Without good and evil, without left and right, without front and back, the earth would be flat.  It is the space between that creates the multi- dimensional world in which we live.
I know that by focusing on current events, all of my pieces will not remain "current". When the event has passed and is no longer newsworthy, that piece will become historical. It then becomes like a family snapshot in an old photo album. Although the external appearance of the people has changed and become a thing of the past, their spirit does live on. I hope that in the future my work conveys something that the old news articles might not convey so well. I hope it conveys something of the spirit of that event and time.
I was born and raised in Florida and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Auburn University. I spent five years in Chicago, IL working as a tradeshow exhibit designer for two exhibit design companies, Nimlok and Exhibitgroup/Giltspur. Although I do not have a Fine Arts degree, I studied for several years at the post-Baccalaureate level at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, in drawing/painting and sculpture. I currently reside in Miami, Florida and have a studio in the Damien B. Contemporary Art Center located in the Wynwood District.
