Artist's Statement
My art is intuitive. I usually need something to trigger my imagination. I will look around me for something that clicks in me, and then build my images on that. What I see serves as a point of departure for the works that ensue.

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
A couple of my professors: Bill Loy, Stanley Caywood and Ivan Schieferdecker were a huge influence on me and so were some trips I took to the Chicago Art Institute. I was literally bowled over by an exhibit of John Singer Sargent's work. The way he painted is what really got to me.I love the Art Institute and have seen many great exhibitions there. Their collection of Impressionists work has meant a lot to me. I especially like the color and light. When it comes to Chagall I must say I love the poetic quality of his painting. The color is exquisite and the idea that he painted what he felt and remembered and didn't really worry about what movement he belonged to. I like his independence. I guess my biggest artistic inspiration has been the exhibitions I've been blessed to view.I most also give some credit to my dear friend and fellow artist John Warren Oakes for his loyalty, inspiration and encouragement. Also, recently Farideh Peacock has been a great source of help and encouragement through the Indianapolis Art Center. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I just knew I was an artist. As soon as I was conscious of the choices life provides. There were a number of talented people in my family but they didn't have the passion for art that I have. Consequently I went on to study art in college and to teach it. I've never lost the passion although the events of life have caused me to back away from art from time to time. Now I pour over my old work and look for common threads of meaning. The threads are there although I feel apologetic about skipping around a bit. That isn't what artists are supposed to do but all that past work has brought to now and I feel like I am truly on the brink of discovery. Acrylci and oil paintings were always my favorite but I am only now finding the time to really explore the mediums myself. For me acrylic is a good fit. I have just begun to devote my energies in this direction. |

| Your Personal Biography |
I was born in Louisville, Ky. My maiden name is Alston. I graduated twice from Western Kentucky University. I owe a lot to the education I received there. I had wonderful professors and the artistic atmosphere of the school had a lasting impact. I have experimented with many different materials and am always searching for a way to be a better artist.I have exhibited mostly in Kentucky and Indiana. I have a studio in my home and am still trying to paint better. I taught school for many years in both high school and college. I now love to take classes. |
