Artist Statement for Marina Montanaro

The pillars of my art are: 1) a good story 2) ink or pencil on tracing paper.
It could be defined as Poptual, which means a mix of conceptual and popular, the pursuit of a balance between the Word and the Line, sustained by the Void. It has to be funny and it can be in colours.
It was at the time of the Muhammad Cartoons* controversy that I heard my “true calling”. I understood that I love cartoons and I love journalism, and will be happy only mixing them together. A pointed cartoon can really drive home concepts that words alone or images alone could not do.
Always an admirer of artists who were monks or religious souls, like the great Japanese master Jakuchu (1716-1800), I root the stories that I want to tell into the mysticism of Islam.
