Artist Statement:
Marne Adler’s textured, layered paintings are full of depth and nuance. One reviewer coined the term “Magical Symbolism” and she has since been associated with that genre.
Intrigued by mankind’s search for meaning, Marne spent many years traveling throughout the world, learning cultural myths, scriptural allegories and mystic rituals. She draws on these experiences when creating her work.
Marne’s inquisitive nature always leads to experimentation; she has developed a unique painting style which demands a highly skilled handling of materials. She primes her canvases with a paste of marble dust and pigments to create a multilayered surface and proceeds to build up until the image begins to “emerge”. This variation on the fresco is strikingly dramatic. She creates excitement by placing serene figures and images amidst the strong, gestural palette knife sweeps and slashes. Her work suggests its connection to the earth as well as to the divine, its fragility along with its strength, its tactile surfaces like mythic layers of timeless knowledge.
Influenced by Master Symbolists such as Redon and Moreau, her images are infused with a visual language of the Soul.
