| Your Personal Biography |
My paintings are about the journey and are the expression of a chosen moment in time. An artist should take pleasure in his journey, indulging in the pure joy of playing with the paints or whatever medium used. It is the journey, not the destination!
As the artist, capturing the emotion of a place, recognition or a feeling that one can identify with is important to me. To make you see what I have seen is part of my objective; but to have you feel what I felt is the ultimate goal! The journey of the mind is as important as the journey of the feet.
I grew up in Smyrna and still live in beautiful North Georgia. Imagine flowing creeks, tall trees, sunlit rocks, rolling hills, apple orchards, or the summer scent of fresh bailed hay. This has been the inspiration for the beginning of my journey and has led me across the country, to Europe and Jamaica.
Paintings are produced in the studio and outdoors (plein air) with oil, acrylic or pastel. My plein air work is about the journey of learning to observe correctly which teaches me the colors, the atmosphere and the light. My studio work, then, is not limited by a photographic image.
Although, I consider the outdoors my classroom, I has taken from many talented teachers and read many technical and inspirational art books. Elsie Dresch, Terry Ludwig, Bob Rohm, Duane Wakeham, Susan Ogilvie, Albert Handel, Lorenzo Chavez and Kim Lordier have been some of the guides on my journey to acquire knowledge. One of the primary goals for my classes and workshops is to pass on to students the knowledge I have gained on my journey. The journey has helped me to develop my techniques, my marketing, and a level of artistic achievement. These things are what I am often asked to share with art organizations or during demonstrations in galleries.
My paintings have been accepted into many juried exhibitions and have won numerous awards. I have achieved the status of “Member of Excellence” in the Southeastern Pastel Society. I was recently included in the International Association of Pastel Societies’ 2009-2010 Calendar with my painting “Sunflower Tango” – May, 2010. In October, 2008, the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association and the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild held their first National Show which was juried by nationally acclaimed artist, Alan Flattmann. One of my paintings, “Musical Waters,” a pastel, won “Second Best in Show”; and another pastel, “The Stand,” won the “People’s Choice Award.” The Art du Pastel Society of France juried a North Georgia plein air painting, “Golden Opportunity” into their 2007 International Pastel Exhibition and then into a traveling exhibit to Giverny, France.
