Artist Statement:
Although I am interested in many things, I am greatly inspired by science, nature, books, music, skyscrapers, artists and people. With that said, the creative process for my work usually begins with one of the following situations: a visual image persisting over time, an idea compelling me to act by researching the idea, a dream, a significant event or defining "ah-ha" moment. All of these situations compel me to give them physical form and color. Painting, for me, is a love affair with color, alchemy, texture and fluidity, it’s boldness and subtleties, it’s ability to place one in a contemplative, sad or excited mood, and it’s infinite uses.
With a former professional background in critical care nursing, scientific and medical knowledge combined with extensive clinical experiences serve as a rich pool of imagery, creativity, and thought for my work. My academic studies include an RN from Muhlenberg School of Nursing, and an MPA from Rutgers University.

By: Roshika West

"COMPASSION: LOOK, LISTEN, LEARN... all of the artists works were excellent and told stories that made viewers think...Marti Hand's illustrative paintings quickly capture the eyes of viewers because of their color, movement, and illustrative details of each painting. Hand notes that she wants to you use her artwork to bring awareness to AIDS, pharmaceuticals, and the human spirit. The painting entitled "Wounded" (acrylic on canvas) was superior featuring red blood cells and platelets healing in a wound. The detailed close up of the bright red cells and yellow platelets, in motion with the strips of green, create an invigorating visual experience while the message of the painting, healing, leaves viewers feeling comforted. The painting "Mending Hearts" has similar movement and bright colors that symbolize medication healing broken hearts featured in the outstanding painting. Perhaps the painting that provoked the most thought on AIDS awareness was "Hand's Helping the Helpers" that beautifully features green "helper cells," which prevent infection being attacked by HIV, the blue cells. When viewed, "Hand's" amazing work will surely touch the heart and stimulate the mind as well..."
