Artist Statement:
Nature slays me. I am so amazed at how perfect and beautiful it is. My art has been influenced more by nature than anything else in the world.
I was lucky enough to grow up "in the sticks" so that my everyday childhood was filled with fishing for crayfish in the creek and playing with tadpoles, frogs and salamanders out of the pond. I also trapped and raised raccoons and opossums. I collected weeds and stones because I loved the textures and colors. I began drawing from nature at a very young age and never lost interest.
As an adult I began to be very interested in anything Chinese. Their appreciation and respect for nature in art drew me to study traditional Chinese brush paintings for many years. I had some exceptional brush teachers like Kwok Kay and Alice Choey and Michael and Sarina Poon.
The work I do now combines both eastern and western techniques....

| Your Personal Biography |
Mary Eland (aka Ai Ma Li) feels she was born blessed with talents in both art and music. When her parents heard her humming in tune along with her mother’s singing at 61/2 months, they were certain their daughter would end up being a musician--until they put some crayons in her tiny hands.
In college, Mary majored in both art and music, but left early to become a full time working musician while painting in her spare time. She recorded with jazz greats such as Gerry Mulligan, Max Kaminsky and Bucky Pizzarelli, then moved into writing jingles for radio and television (“Wait’ll We Get Our Hanes On You,” “Legomania,” etc.) before returning full-time to her art..
Mary studied art in America and China, learning the traditional techniques of both cultures. This East/West, “fusion-style” approach is incorporated into all of her artistic creations. Because of her great interest in China, she has been an avid practitioner of Tai Chi for more than thirty years and has learned how to speak Mandarin.
Mary has always had an awareness of patterns in art and music, and the harmonious structures that exist in nature. Most people intuitively connect with such structures--which is why all of her art has organic roots. |
