Artist Statement for Mary Mary

I am a figurative artist, and I am fascinated with the human experience. My paintings attempt to convey a feeling or mood and focus upon human emotions and issues.

As a figurative painter with expressionistic influences, I choose colors for their particular emotional impact. The background also plays an important part in my paintings. The mood of the background is alive with action and is in direct opposition to the somberness of the figures.

Current Works in progress
I am currently working on my "Morning Makeup" series. There will be a total of 6 paintings.
The figure is getting ready for work in the morning and is shown putting on her makeup using a silver mirror and the latest makeup products, while watching a morning news program. In the background is a large abstract painting by Haynes Owenby. My figures are done in a "high key" technique and I hope to keep the background loose and suggestive.

Short Bio
Mary Mary has studied at various schools in the Houston area, focusing primarily on oil painting and printmaking. She studied at The Art League of Houston with one of their finest artists, Cholla. Who taught Mary Mary everything there is to know about art.
She also taught art after school for elementary children with Creative Alternatives.

She has exhibited her sculpture works in Houston with the Buffalo Bayou Art Park and has shown in various galleries in the past before battling colon cancer. That experience has taught her to take her art in a new direction that makes her art more reflective and personal for the viewer.
