ARTISTS STATEMENT
I began working with light translucent nylon fabric in 1978. It has turned into a life time of experimentation with the beauty of the fabric, the precision of the technique, and as many forms as I can imagine. The fabric is light weight, silken, and sturdy.
My focus is the suspended balanced mobile which hangs from one point; very Calderesque. The essential light weight of the work allows me to work in a very large scale. The mobiles move within the interior air currents, softly floating, revolving, turning.
My hero is Alexander Calder. I am blessed to have a light weight medium with a beautiful drape, creating light and shadow and looks like stained glass. The fabric reacts even to moonlight. The only real weight is in the stainless steel tubing which I form to create the armatures. I balance the works using a crane to pick the entire mobile up off the ground far enough to find the delicate balance points.
My medium is little known. The fabric pieces are assembled by “border appliqué” in light translucent fabric. I haven’t seen what I do anywhere else. I have invented and developed aspects of the technique, the color combinations, the forms and attachments.
What is the driving force behind this infatuation? Most of my vision is purely invested in the medium. It is the combinations of lighted colors transferred into the interiors by the translucent fabric. It is the balance, the graceful motion, the moment when I go “Aah.” And, I do have an inner drive; I have found that my works make people happy. People attach to the works. They watch, they meditate on the movement. I believe that by adding beauty and balance to the human environment, my audience is given a moments respite and time to watch the air move.
