Artist Statement:
Kathleen Colussy’s series contends with the dueling realities of the slick gloss travel brochures and the gritty real life of the indigenous people living and working in a given country.
Colussy’ work relates to the complexity of reconciling and integrating the truth behind these two conflicting realities in her art.
Kathleen’s work is a series of handmade books entitled: Treasures our of darkness, hidden in plain sight.
Each handmade book is based on a given country or culture, that has been constructed in a variety of mixed media including and not limited to; photography, ceramics, surface embellishment, reclaimed materials and the use of digital printing and dye sublimation.
The books are filled with multi-layered and non linear images that reveal the disconnection of the dueling realities that are confronted. Several issues that addressed are; human trafficking, the homeless, issues of rape, indentured servants, AIDS, forced sterilization and abortions, and child prostitution. The difficult subject matter is handled in a reverential and non-confrontational manner.
The elegant sophistication of how each of the books have been constructed, beckons the viewer to a more and intimate glimpse into the mind and heart of the artist. The engaging visual story ...

Curious, Contemplative, Committed, Compassionate, Conceptual & Spiritual
These adjectives describe how I view myself, as a person and as an artist! As a conceptual artist I recognize that my work, is extremely dependant on text or discourse.
My goal is to visually stimulate and to evoke a response from my audience. Either, to attract them to want to know more about the work itself, or perhaps instead to challenge themselves to ask what or why the work evoked or provoked a given response within them.
I believe that along with the notion of provoking an aesthetic experience, art should cause us to think, to be more curious, to ask questions, to seek answers. Powerful art must be honest, it must be real. It MUST be filled with truth!
My art is a reflection of my own spirituality, my curiosity, or in some cases, my intellectual and/or emotional response to a personal or spiritual encounters or experience, that I believe that I am compelled to tangibly transmute into a piece of art.
What the purveyors of the art do with the work after that, is now up to them.
One of my current series deals with the Choice and Consequences. My observation is that sometimes we are unaware of the impact of the choices we have and the choices we make. Sadly, sometimes we don't even realize we have "choices."
All of us our bombarded with images and information, daily we are assaulted with ideas and issues compelling us to ascribe to. We spend more time selecting an outfit to wear than we do for developing a filtering system to contend with the onslaught of choices. My art is meant to contend with this.
According to Marshall McLuhan the medium is the message, but in this case the message is the medium!
I believe that art has a voice, it has a message, it has purpose for being created, and should reflect it's creator!
It is interesting the Philosopher, Alexander Nehamas believes, we need to spend quality time with an object of art to determine its value, beauty or its "promise of happiness."
In his book on the subject, he comes to the conclusion if we invest the interest and time the results will be as follows: 1) It will be good for us, 2) It will disappoint us, or 3) It will please us, but ultimately be bad for us.
My hope is that, YOU will invest quality time, and then YOU will be rewarded for that investment and that it WILL BE GOOD FOR YOU!
May you catch a glimpse of the creator, as you take a look!
Let those who have ears to hear, and eyes to see.... LISTEN to the voice of one crying in the wilderness, beckoning them.
