Artist Statement for Moeed Ahmad Khan

MY STYLE: EXPRESSIONISM IN MODERN COLOURS.

BACKGROUND.

In the beginning, when I entered in the Art field, I was very confused about colours, what should I do when applying the colours on the canvas? And why? Neither had I a reason for that, nor did anybody satisfy me regarding colour application. The things which were disconcerting me were colour combinations, contrast of colours, colour harmony, rhythm produced by colours, meanings of the colours in different aspects, etc.

To resolve this disconcertion, I started looking at books such as "The Complete Book of Colour", "Colour Harmony for Better Living", "Serene Interiors", etc. and studied them thoroughly. Then I made comprehensive and concise points out of them and compiled them, in printed-booklet form, with the title "Immense Dwelling of Colours".

Now I’m always using this book whenever I paint. With the help of this booklet of 20 pages, some of my problems are reduced and skills are raised to the primary level of the colour understanding. Because it’s only fulfilling the basic requirements which is also a necessity.

THE FINAL EFFORTS.

In the initial months of the third year I learnt a few techniques of modern art and some new applications of giving the textures. Now the quick sketching of model’s postures in 5 seconds to 15 seconds became the part of class assignments. Ghalib Baqar was the one who did this. The results were affirmatively positive. Now I started taking real interest in class-work and as a result I’ became able to make a portrait in 15 minutes with a resemblance and right proportion. I liked this kind of realistic work, work that is real but with fewer details and no shading.

In the meantime another teacher was hired for a short course on colour understanding, which was helpful to me for modern art. On the other hand my self-efforts in colour theory brought a fruitful solution. Because of all these exercises, I learnt the basic meanings of colours, and initial applications of colour theory.

The new teacher, who came for colour exercises only, now became permanent. His initial assignments seem to be irrelevant, but those who took advantage of these “irrelevant exercises” were on the right direction in the future. Some of the students were guided. I was one of them. He guided me to the way I wanted to move towards.

These pioneer sketches and colour layouts took my painting towards bright and fresh colours, with flow and forceful lines. As I ponder this style, I think it seems to fall in the category of Expressionism. I’d rather call it "Expressionism in Modern Colours".

I know I don’t see things in detail, then how could I draw or paint things thoroughly? It can be done merely on occasion, but not always. This is the main cause of my not accepting Realism. I do like my current paintings with bright colours and flat effect that is in two-dimensional. This simplified and flat styles has enthused me to produce more and more work.

MINI-THESIS TOPIC.

How should I figure out my topic? My initial paintings are conceptual as well as figurative. When I think I’m getting command in my hands, then I choose different topics. The first one is landscapes – that is, the current residential architecture with the western influence. I used photographs for the compositions and layouts. I called Mr. Rashid Akbar for my individual jury and apply what I’ve learned from the jury, afterwards in further paintings. After discussions, finally I decide to continue on Landscapes for my mini-thesis with eastern architecture.

At this time, I am continuing with two compositions, that is paintings of residential architecture and trees.
HOW SHOULD I INTERPRET MY PAINTINGS?

I can now say that my style is composed of certain elements as well as styles.

I like to apply Psychedelic colours on my canvas with bold black outlines. My colour palette is bright, sharp, flat, and warm. I pick colours from the colour wheel and apply them in complementary as well as split-complimentary schemes. When I’m working, the paints are in liquid form and I’m applying them with force and speed. In my landscapes, I like to make the architecture simplified geometric patterns, something like in the style of Bauhaus. I enjoy working on more than two or three paintings at a time, rather than one. Now my style is Poussiniste (linear) with a mere touch of Rubeniste painterly brushwork, as well as a slight admixture of the earlier style of Jackson Pollack.

To further improve my work, currently I have found three people to follow in the future. These include Emil Hansen Nolde, Souza and Jackson Pollack.

In the end I must say that if I’m doing the good work then it’s because of Allah, Who has blessed me with this quality, because there is no such thing as creativity. Everything is already created, we’re only composing it.
