Artist Statement for Monica Malbeck

I graduated at very earlier age, from a highly successful pilot Art Program in Europe. I was very fortunate to be part of this Art program that offer exposure to all facets of art, and get me prepare to create Art and work anything Art related Job.I designed clothes, work as image consultant. I do computer work,I paint, mixed media, paint furniture, create different functional objects from daily recycling objects . After finishing the program, I pass a highly competitive test and work in Fashion. Was my career for half om my life. I had a successful career as the head fashion designer in a large Co. in Europe . Fashion was my first passion in Art. I design clothes at 11 that were made by highly professionals Houte Couture .dress makers

I did retire at very early age from my career in Fashion as a image consultant in USA. When I retire I move to Hawaii and fall in love in a instant with the Island life and the beauty of Hawaiian People spirit. In Hawaii I start to learn and explore more the computer Art Work. Than I move to Fiji ,where my breath was taking a way by the raw and untouched beauty. I started to paint and draw in Fiji, being influenced by the simplicity of the raw environment, and as a need to touch colors. I am surrounded by the most incredible natural colors and incredible simple pure life.
When I work on mixed media and Computer Art,I tend to be more abstract, symbolic. My first submission to an international Art competition in Italy rewarded me with the Special Merit Award for my art work "In Peace We Pray". This is what the judge had to say: "The delicate, beautifully composed and seamlessly worked digital pieces this artist proposes, work as altars or altarpieces for a new age and rather slick religion." I was inspired and highly motivated to continue my art exploration.Than a huge reward was when I received in 2006, second place from MOCA N.Y; the most prestigious Computer Art Gallery in New York
My paintings are mostly portraits with a story, or birds, fish.
My very first painted Art work, was bought by a well known Australian Artist, and my second painting I made was bought by an European Art collector, and the nest two, by a famous USA photographer. It is rewording to see that my work had being understood and value by people in the Art World.
I create art because it is part of Me and who I am.I can't "be" without creating some kind of Art work.I can't live with out it.It makes me happy and takes me to a very good place, always.Makes me fell a life!
Time to time I like to do some little funny art work, nothing serious or intense.
Sometimes I need to release complex feelings. Other times because I can't use words to express myself, or there is my need to comment about life injustices.
My work shown here in the gallery,it show a variation of themes and techniques; abstract, representations of emotions or imaginary whimsy, realistic or abstract portraits, narrative style images, and graphic art statements, some fun images inspired by my life now in Fiji.
I generally create what and how I feel; with no rules.I go from the complexity of Computer Art and I paint fish, birds, and portraits. I have faces, and different expression, stored over the years somewhere in my mind. I had always being intrigued by different facial expression, and people faces in general, or body expression. Those images live in my mind and fade in time enough for me to unconsciously save them through my paintings.
The most revealing example of this process was one of my second paint work in Fiji. Few days later , after I finish my painting,I found a picture of me when I was 17, black and white, and it was me at 17 in that colorful portrait that I had just finished. The big dreamer intense eyes, with fears and hopes for the unknown future.
I mostly use paint from the tube and paint with my hand and my fingers. Sometimes I clap my hands with paint on id, and the paint splash on the canvas will open my imagination and I go from there.
I over work on the hair, tick texture intense colors. Very textured and strong lines. The originality of my technique has created high interest from few Art Galleries. Now I am working on few collections for next year. Lately,I had few intense personal losses experiences recently in my personal life, that inspire me to work, after a very long brake. My next collection, which I hope to finish by next summer, it will be more "minimalism" conceptional category. It will be intense and challenging and with no boundary.
I am proud that my art work is part of private collectors all over the world;
USA/Hawaii
Europe
Fiji/New Zealand/ Australia/Japan

enjoy my work,
with love from Fiji
Monica
