Artist Statement:
In my early work I was focused
on birds of prey. I was
trying to communicate their
majesty and strength. Now I am
working on capturing the
harmony and beauty of the Iowa
landscape in Oils. I tend to
identify with the Tonalist
style of painting,
concentrating on values and
shapes more than color. ...

Why Did You Become An Artist To express myself

Your Personal Biography I am inspired by the Iowa landscape. When I find a scene that “connects” with me emotionally I will do some quick sketches to explore what it is that draws me to the scene. In my sketch I concentrate on arranging and simplifying the major shapes and values. Then, working in oils, I do a small color study, sometimes on site and at times working from my sketches and photos taken. Once I am happy with the color study, I begin a larger studio painting.

At this point in my growth I am identifying with the “Tonalist” approach to painting. My inspiration and growth comes from other artist, reading books and attending museum collections. I use a minimal palette and paint on archival quality artist board.
