Artist Statement for Marc Ross

Artist’s Statement
As the pace of everyday life becomes faster and we find ourselves attached to a technological umbilical cord, addicted to instant communication and multi-tasking, art must serve as a counterbalance to help us slow down and recenter. My artwork is mostly nonrepresentational, nonverbal, and quiet, mimicking life’s veils and complexities that expand and reveal themselves over time. I am fascinated by process and leave each painted layer overflowing the stretcher’s boundaries to expose the painting’s sequential buildup. When contemplated from a distance, the color aspects of each painting will vibrate and move atmospherically off the canvas only to retreat and disappear into the surface on close inspection. This dynamic creates an outward/inward dialogue for the viewer. My paintings are all about distilling time and distance.
BIOGRAPHY
Marc Ross was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After having lived in Chicago and Baltimore, Maryland, he returned to Ohio eight years ago with his wife and son. He received his BFA from Ohio University, attended graduate school at the University of Chicago, and completed his MFA at Kent State University.
Ross has exhibited in numerous venues, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art and various galleries in Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
After moving back to Ohio, he has been a lecturer in the art department of The Ohio State University and a Saturday School instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Presently teaching at Gahanna Lincoln High School.
