| Your Personal Biography |
I was born on April 6th, 1965 in a small town of Labin, situated in the central part of the eastern coast of the Istria peninsula in the Republic of Croatia.
This small picturesque town, rich with cultural and artistic heritage and tradition of art, known for a large number of famous artist (sculptors, painters, graphic artist) living and working there, greatly influenced my art and future creative work. Ever since the early childhood – the beginnings of artistic expression when I was seven, I have known that intense perception, sense of colour, refined sense of space, trying out various artistic techniques and materials will be the main interest and preoccupation in my future development and creative work and that it will direct my creative possibilities toward artistic and creative life and work.
The affinity towards painting and art was already surmisable during my primary education, when I was ten or eleven. Distinctive talent for painting which was growing stronger resulted in numerous students' and children's exhibitions and contest that were crowned with awards and appreciation. That fact definitely determined my further education.
At that time my first paintings were born: acrylics on canvas – mainly the first landscapes, still lifes, and by the time I was 14, there were numerous oil paintings and acrylics on canvas of bigger dimensions (100cmx100cm), with different motives from landscapes, portraits to abstractions and expressions, both on canvas and on paper, numerous drawings, graphics, linocuts, multicoloured prints, combined techniques etc. which were all created in the school's art group.
After primary school, I continued my secondary education in Pula (a town in the south of the Istria peninsula), where I entered the School of Arts and Crafts in the High Scool Education Centre “Branko Semelić” in class of professor and artist Ivan Obrovac. My artistic expression started to fully develop there and I started to build my own artistic technique and style. The great experience, knowledge and the use of the most diverse techniques, materials, methods and skills acquired in such an artistic school had great effect on my artistic development and work.
Various techniques and skills acquired and developed there, along with the gained knowledge and experience are an inevitable part of one’s developmental and creative cycle and they remain a permanent part of the future artist's personality!
Graphic design, painting, drawing, calligraphy, graphic techniques and etching, copperplate-engraving, dry needle, el-seco and el-fresco wall painting are only some of the skills acquired during my work and study in the School of Modelling, Design and Techniques workshops.
In 1983, after I finished my secondary education with excellent grades, I became the “Art expert for graphics, design, techniques and modelling”. In the same year I was admitted to the Academy of Fine Art at the then Pedagogical Academy in Rijeka, majoring in painting in class of the late professor Anton Depope (also a painter).
Then followed the years of study and perfection, of gathering knowledge,
experience and skills, both theoretical: art history, iconology, iconography, theories
of colours, techniques, art cultures, art relations – of colours, light, lines,
perspectives, methodology and many others, and then practical: drawing and
painting (diverse motives: nudes, portraits, still lifes, compositions, abstractions
and experiments with shapes, colours and techniques), use of various techniques
on different materials, sculptures, graphics, arts of crafts and finally my specialization
in painting.
After I graduated with excellent academic standing and became the “Professor of
art history and visual arts”, I spent years in perfecting my techniques, my artistic language and expression, experimenting, searching for my own style and expression. In that search of my own expression and authentic artistic identity, a growing number of artistic works were created, mostly drawn and then coloured, and the interwoven play, interdependence and the connection between those two important technical elements and the manner of their interpretation and use were highly emphasized. Thematically, they were very different from the usual artistic styles – both in form and content.
My inborn sensitivity, perceptiveness, observation and the affinity towards nature and the human, along with the inspiration which was ever-growing from studying and perceiving nature and humans, heralded the theme and its elaboration, thereby long hours were put in to investigate and emphasize the interdependent relationship between man and nature. My creative powers were directed to natural and human motives, with human as nature's inseparable part, and figuratively and abstractly working on the theme, imbuing it with lyrical abstractions of the two relations, I spent years building composition and adapting their performance, thus building my unique and distinguished artistic style.
After my study, a long period of artistic production followed in all fields, along with numerous exhibitions - group and individual, presentations of my work. Art became the irretrievable need – thirst which needed to be satisfied daily and expressed in every segment of my life. This need is all-present and infinite.
Until today, I have had around forty individual exhibitions in my home country and in Europe, numerous group exhibitions and gatherings with presentations of my artwork.
More than five hundred works have been created as a result of working with different techniques and materials, organized in artistic units – opuses. Many of my works are now owned by various museums and galleries, where the exhibitions were held, but also by collectors, distinguished persons in Croatia, Austria, Germany, England, France, Czech Republic and Italy, and finally by art lovers who had visited the exhibitions.
An enviable number of exhibitions were held during the Civil war in Croatia in almost all Croatian cities as the means of support, and as contribution to preservation and development of art culture. At that time, I was specially invited by the Presidency of the Constitutional court in Croatia to lend solemnity with my exhibition to the gathering of foreign delegations in our country as a way of presenting our culture and art. Among other gifts and tributes, my paintings were then given to many distinguished persons in the name of the Republic of Croatia, whereby I became a part of promoting Croatian culture and art in the world.
I engaged in some humanitarian work during the war in Croatia, by participating in many humanitarian exhibitions for sale, many gatherings, and helped with the restoration of the holdings of galleries and museums in the war affected areas.
I am an active member of the HDLU – Croatian Association of Artists with the central office in Zagreb, and of LIKUM – The Society of Artists in Croatia, also in Zagreb, recentlly I¨am a member of the SoHo and Chelsea fine art community under "Agora Gallery" - from New York, but I work and exhibit independently. I am a winner of many awards and acknowledgments for my creative artistic work and for my contribution to art and culture.
I live, work and produce in Rijeka – the city on the river of the same name in the north-western part of Croatia.
