Artist Statement:
My work involves painting and drawing portraits of 'figurative situations' that blend both realistic and abstract elements. I am interested in experimenting with composition, color, and paint application to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. The portraits and figurative scenes I construct serve as a vehicle of expression for aspects of the human condition, such as isolation, fragmentation, and disorientation.
With an idea in mind, I often start a painting in reference to a set of photographic sources. Using photos as a point of departure, I then will often work and rework a painting, while letting happy accidents trickle in. The result I aim for is using the paint medium to give my figures an immediate presence that goes beyond the photos documentation of that individual. ...
