| Your Personal Biography |
After graduating with Distinctions in Painting in 1971, Noel Hodnett joined the staff of the Fine Art Department at Rhodes University in South Africa as a photographic technician and part-time ceramics instructor. Hodnett was promoted to Head of Photography in 1975 and took up the position of Head of the Painting and Drawing School at Rhodes University in 1985. He held this position until moving to Canada in 1997.
Noel Hodnett participated in all three Cape Town Triennials and was selected to represent South Africa at the Valparaiso Biennale in Chile in 1989. In 1992, Hodnett was invited guest artist-in-residence at the South African National Festival of the Arts and followed this up with a major solo exhibition at the prestigious Standard Bank Centre Gallery in November of that year.
Hodnett was solo guest artist at the Everard Read Gallery in Johannesburg during the first Johannesburg Biennale in 1995 and was invited to exhibit at Art First in Cork Street, London in 1996.
Hodnett’s first major solo exhibition in Canada took place in 2002. Since then Hodnett has exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries in Vancouver and now owns and operates Hodnett Fine Art, his own contemporary fine art gallery in Vancouver.
In 2007, Bill Jeffries, Director of Simon Fraser University Galleries, curated an exhibition by Hodnett depicting victims of authoritarian regimes. The acclaimed 'Memory, History and Loss' exhibition centered around 8 paintings which the artist donated to the University. These and other works by the artist works are on permanent display at SFU's Burnaby campus.
Noel Hodnett's work can be found in all the major public collections in South Africa as well as numerous corporate and private collections in South Africa, France, Britian, USA, Canada, Portugal and Australia. |
