| Your Personal Biography |
Okezie Nwosu was born on October 2, 1974 into the family of Mr and Mrs Patrick Achilefu Nwosu of blessed memory. Born at Enugu in the defunct East Central State, South East Nigeria, he hails from Umuejije Village,Amaitolu Ovungwu Autonomous Community, Abia State, Nigeria. He is the third in a family of seven.
His childhood days were replete with life experiences at Enugu, Owerri, Umuejije, and Aba, all in South Eastern Nigeria. Okezie’s talent manifested early in childhood. He recalls, as a little boy, making drawings of various subjects under the pretext of reading his books and doing his homework; especially when prompted by his dad to read.
He attended and graduated from Primary and Secondary Schools with distinction in Art. It is however interesting to note the artistic influence he gained from Mr Herbert Obioma (his Fine Art teacher in Secondary School), which culminated in his choice of Art as a profession. Mr Obioma gave him an early practical exposure to the genres of painting, sculpture, textile, printmaking and design. It was common among Okezie’s classmates to refer to him as “Mr Obioma (Art Master)”.
Okezie later gained admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to study Fine and Applied Arts. He graduated magna cum laude, obtaining Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1998. He was also a recipient of the Maiden Edition of Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting (later Accenture) Merit Award for Scholastic Achievement. He successfully carried out the one year of mandatory Youth Service to his father land, gaining more accolades. A Graphic artist by training, Painter and Sculptor by inclination, Okezie’s versatility spans across Photography and Poetry.
He had a very humble beginning, starting off his studio in a balcony, while a squatter in the three-bedroom family flat of his uncle Mr and Mrs Raymond Izuwah at Aba. This was during his undergraduate days. He was able to raise an appreciable clientele, effectively combining academics with enterprise. This earned him the tag “Job Man” in the eyes of his classmates at the University. As an entrepreneur, he established his own agency-Visions Functions Nigeria, based in Aba, with the encouragement of his friend and art dealer Mr Benson Ojeikere, his elder brother Mr Kelechi Nwosu, and his elder sister Ms Edith Nwosu. This agency and studio has been a success story and responsible for the artistic consciousness of some upcoming artists.
Okezie’s life has been one of self struggle and varied experiences, built on an invincible spirit hungry for success. His life x-rays the experiences of a struggling artist, and remains the scaffold upon which his character and personality rest. He works in a variety of media, using chiefly oil colours. His works are dynamic, laden with emotional content and reflect the vibrations of his mind. They chiefly give insight into his stylistic sensibilities and development; from an era of realism to one of stylization and abstraction. He continuously searches for fresh idioms of expression, drawing inspiration from nature and life experiences. He works in contemporary and traditional styles, mostly on commission, and has his works adorning homes, businesses, and offices in Nigeria, United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States of America. He also has some art exhibitions and publications to his credit.
Okezie sees life as an ordained ritual in which the individual should be an active participant, borrowing from nature the source of all consciousness and making up for her imperfections. He engages in Martial Arts (Taekwondo), Thinking, and listening to classical music and jazz, as hobbies. He is married to Leona Chika Nwosu and they now live in Texas U.S.A., from where he works.
