Press release:Solo Exhibition 3rd October 2008
ABD the Gallery, formally Tristan’s The Gallery,
is proud to present Jean and June Pastore’s latest solo exhibition of glass art - ‘Meeting of the Minds’.
The title of this exhibition comes from the meeting of the minds that occurs between the two sisters in the production of these artworks; each of the pieces a collaboration.
This sister duo has devised a unique technique and use of the medium of glass. The pieces are paintings in glass, where each piece of glass is hand cut and painted, using many pieces to create a work of art.
Calling their technique “brushstrokes in glass’ the sisters achieve sophisticated combinations of colours, shapes and reflectivity to create abstracted and figurative land- and mind-scapes. With an intricate appreciation for the importance of each ‘stroke’ of glass and the increasingly precise methods of cutting, the images are able to convey great depth of tone and space.
The ‘meeting of minds’, much like the meeting of the segments of glass, can both oppose and compliment each other at different times: creating a spectacular disharmony and unity in shape, colour, abstraction and figuration.
The stunning pieces in this body of work include abstract impressions of natural and urban landscapes and mindscapes, along with figurative depictions of fields, flowers and cities. But whether abstracted or pertaining to real life all of the Pastore images represent an aesthetic play with the exciting possibilities of colour and shape.
The separation of colour provides the opportunity for dramatic contrasts in colour and tone. The compartmentalised pieces stand together to challenge our expectations and the way we have come to perceive art itself.
The abstract works, like ‘Sorry’ and ‘Red Stratosphere’, differ from the current ‘intuitive’ trend in contemporary abstract art. The medium used necessitates that the images are planned, constructed and pieced together with much thought and deliberation. Taking approximately six weeks to complete, these images are considered and, as such, every colour and shape is purposeful and powerful.
One of the most striking and unique features of these glass artworks is their brilliant and lively reflective surfaces. Although the surface is segmented, its broken nature is transcended by their luminosity. The works represent the reflectivity of a city space, of nature and of our internal and external battles and the beauty and difficulty of relationships.
Hailing originally from England these sister have lived in Western Australia for over 25 years. Since moving to Mandurah in 2001 they have been honing their skills and perfecting their wonderful technique. Much celebrated and exhibited as artists of the Peel region, this is the Pastores’ first solo exhibition in Perth.
When beginning their professional art careers over seven years ago Jean and June Pastore originally set out looking for an impressionistic feel. As a result this sister duo, in the meeting of their minds and talents, managed to devise a medium and technique that speaks powerfully and confidently about colour, shape and light in a way that no painting on canvas ever can.
ABD the Gallery is thrilled to exhibit the luminous and wondrous works of two fantastic minds.
Meeting of the Minds opens on Friday 3rd of October and runs until 19th of October 2008.
ABD the Gallery is located at: 240 Lake Street, Northbridge.
