A New York City native residing in Toronto,Paul J. Carroll between periods of travel in North America and the Caribbean, has absorbed and transmuted sensibilities of the urban eye to emerge with stylizations of vision which speak directly of the fabric of our times.Information redacted by elements of time or intent;stressed,abstracted,repe ated.obscured and recreated;blend rhythmically into new denotations of compressed reality upon his canvas.
Informed by the view of the city structures;Carroll interprets graffitti as"a form of expression which combines a childlike application with bold and often complex statements" and sees a distortion in billboards as"new information is constantly added over old.The process culminates in the abstraction of information, creating a deterioration of fact."Emotive exaggeration and emphasis is amixed to"layers of compound images "with "peeled away "segments and unified with painterly skill to present the viewer with "an array of abstracted forms and images which build a thoroughly exciting and inventive whole."...
