Interview ZOOM INTERNATIONAL Magazine March / April 2009
In our statement you mention Julia Margaret Cameron's, Sarah Moon, Paolo Roversi, and Javier Vallhonrat as photographers who were always a source of inspiration for you.Could you explain why?
* All their visuals were always having a certain esthetic ,
sensibility and lighting of what i felt was something beautiful (a
chiaro e obscuro)
something that touched me within , there's a way of not finding the
obvious within their work..A certain uniqueness of the way
they capture their images, it's like a timeless dream.
Julia Margaret Cameron being one of the pionner portrait photographer
was a visionary in an aspect capturing these extraordinary portraits
that were at the same time melancoly.
Both Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi as well used the large format view
Camera for their work.
which has always been very fascinating to me , there's a connection with
what I will call the keepers of light with the 3 of them.
Sarah moon has such a poetic way of taking photograph.
when i fisrt saw the work of Javier Vallhonrat which were self portrait
made with the light of a matches ,who is in a different spectrum of light he brought a different light inspiration within me , the desire to
create visuals in a more raw way , images that are also more about
experimenting with light.
In any case an illusionary world unfold in front of your eyes when you
look at their photographs.*
Which is the relationship between your "commercial" photography (are
you a"fashion" photographer, right?) and your fine-art
photography?Great photographers as Horst P. Horst worked for fashion
photography and began great masters of Photography... what do you think about?
My fine art Photography is my early fashion work.
I Really have the desire to create beautiful images, i could live with .
My commercial Fashion photography is deeply inspired by my fine art work. Because in fashion photography, there is always a blurred line between reality an fantasy. the Challenge is to excite, entice and seduce the public.
Yet the world has become numb and spoiled, bombarded as it is with an
onslaught of images. the call for greater stimulation is forcing us into more daring approaches.
Commercial Fashion Photography should never stop surprising us, making
us dream, posssessing us in some way or another. It digs deep down,
using any means to seduce us. Fashion Photography needs fantasy to
renew itself* .
What do you think about fashion photography, today? Do you find difference between USA and Europe?
*I do find Europe to be much more open to creative Photography in
general , I believe it is part of the European culture.
Things have been changing here in the states as well, It seems the
public is more responding to photography than in the past.
A lot of things we see , are also a bit meaningless in a certain way.
There is a big trend is portraying women more as object than actually
for who they are , simply as beautiful women . women that we can honor
and love for their beauty , their sensuality and fragility..we should
praise them and love them in every aspect..They are themselves a work of
Art.
Do you work with Polaroid now? And which are your clients today?
*Yes I still do for very specific projects, Polaroid film has such a
particular feeling to it. it is so magical. It's almost like an
essence. It is very sad that Polaroid stopped producing their films, for
me it is like somehow we are taking the poetry away in photography, a
new step towards making the world blend. My clients are mostly
editorials and advertising as well as personal projects.*
Why did you adopt more cinematic approach? Is the photography a medium
not enough for you?
*I am adopting a more cinematic approach even so in my fashion photography*
I am starting to play with video for the simple reasons that i also see flows of images , it is a very connected medium with photography, seem like a logical step for me to go along with and discover new experiences and create new visuals. dots are connecting and as you enter a new field, new creative landscape and horizon unfold in front of your eyes, enriching your creativity, merging mediums, bringing new ideas, evolving.*
What do you think about fine-art, today? It seems that there's a great
interest about it... What is your opinion?
*Fine art photography has definitely received a big interest ,interest will increase. I believe in the simple fact to own a photograph for the pleasure of the eyes and senses. I like the idea of creating an image that can bring a feeling, where
somehow fashion can be connected to Art Photography..The public has
been more and more responding to the Art of Photography which i think
is fantastic.*

The Big Picture [ Looking at Fashion is at the Holden Luntz Gallery, Florida, until December 16 , 2006.]
A style all their own
Tastemakers - or slaves to the industry that pays them? We flick through reams of their work in magazines and walk past giant billboards without batting an eyelid, but what do we really think of the role of the fashion photographer? According to the Holden Luntz Gallery, "Fashion photography has always been intrinsically linked to our cultural notions of beauty... relying on the graphic styles of such movements as art deco, pop and minimalism."
Images by stars such as Frank Horvat, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon are currently on display alongside newer snappers, including Erez Sabag and Patrick de Warren. They all deserve a viewing.
