| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I had no choice . from the cradle I remember seeing the the beams of cars headlights shooting images across the bedroom ceiling destroying the 90 degree angles of the confluence of wall and ceiling . it was many years before I could put an intellectual framework around these experiences . but the hook was in already .... I geuss you could say then that I was born to it !! .......... |

Artist, Art Facilitator/
Teacher, Learning Support and
Education Guidance,
Counsellor, Sculptor,
Illustrator and Designer, and
Poet
“The surface of the work is only the beginning. It is what lies beyond
the picture plane that holds the mystery of truth. It is here that the meeting
of the piece with the artist and the viewer takes place. It is here in this
confluence of timeless experience that we commune with ourselves,
the work, the divine and perhaps glimpse the purpose of God.”

Community Arts Projects:
Overview:
I have experience as an outreach worker on the North Peckham Estates in South London, as a resettlement officer working out of St. Giles Trust with a remit for locating 16-19 homeless- this lead to community Art projects with Southwark Borough Council with this client group (1994/5) and on the Elephant and Castle Trinity House Estates- working out of the Trinity House Youth Centre (ILEA) 1978/9, as the Art tutor and Part time Tutor in Charge I was able to engage marginalized groups through various community art projects.
I have also been privileged to be invited by the ‘Perpetual Beauty Masque Club’ to work with them for their 1994 Notting Hill Carnival entry.
Since moving to the south coast in 1995 I have much experience of working as a volunteer in the voluntary and statutory sectors, in teaching and resettlement work dealing with a wide client base in both Hastings and Eastbourne which lead to the facilitation of the 2001 ‘Seaview’ (A drop in centre for homeless people) entry for the ‘Hastings Carnival’.
My Guidance Team Co-ordinator role at HCAT, 2000-2003, allowed me to sit on ten focus/regional groups (Including the Regional Substance Misuse Strategy Group- Hastings and St. Leonards has a huge and very complex drug problem) spanning social / education issues/provision and as the Outreach worker engaged with marginalised client groups displaying diverse and multiple needs has resulted in my having a good overview of social/community need within the Hastings and Rother area and has resulted in my leading community art projects and being involved with Community Art in a wide spectrum of activity.

2000: Employed by the Carr Gomm Society (Supported Housing Association for people with Mental Health issues) Eastbourne. Facilitated a mixed gender 23-60 group that became self motivating, across the region to paint murals/organise art projects within Carr-Gomm. Founded on the back of a community Art project with EBC that resulted in the residents of the house at Hyde Gardens painting a mural @ Hyde Gardens.
2001: Sept/Oct: Exhibition of Art work by students with mental health issues @ Bexhill Museum (Part of ‘Coastal Currents’)- this exhibition was an extension of the Art group I ran throughout the 2000/01 academic year as part of Hastings College of Arts and Technology community supportive education programme. Mixed Gender group 19+ (three of the group are now engaged with the Btec Foundation course at HCAT main campus).
I facilitated this group for East Sussex Social Services between September 2000- October 2007. Working from the premise that Art is therapy the group produced some astounding work as well as making a “contribution to individual recovery and a sense of well being”. This last testimony is a personal comment from several members of the group.
(This event is now a yearly event, the students taking responsibility to liase with Alan Beecher the Museums Exhibition organiser and with various publicity agencies- I still facilitate this group two half days a week: phil flockhart 2006).
2001: August: Hastings Carnival Float project, I facilitated as part of HCAT’s Community Basic skills programme at the ‘Seaview’ drop in centre (client group with multiple needs- substance misuse/ offending/ alcohol misuse/homelessness/mental & physical health needs). Mixed Gender Group 16-60. Several attenders accessed HCAT courses from this activity- it was also part of the national basic skills review in London, Oct 2001; Some of the Seaview attenders went up to London with Seaview staff, and contributed to the presentation.
‘Seaview Carnival Entry- Hastings 2001.
2001: July: Secured funding for a Mural project for the Robsack community centre- as the HCAT rep. on the Life Long Learners Partnership Forum/
Widening Participation (with ESCC). Aimed at 14-25, negotiated with the Youth Service to use the project to encourage more young people to use the community centre- Attenders include, single parents via crèche and play group provision.
2002- 2006: Member of ‘Section 5’ Processional Drummers- perform in and around Hastings and Rother area partaking in Street Festivals and Carnivals and take part in the ‘bonfire season’ as the Drummers for the ‘Robin Hood Bonfire Society’ (Icklesham). I have also co-written and performed street mummers plays with and for ‘Section 5’ (Website: section5.org.uk).
2003: In January 2003 I started in the post of Art and Design Tutor at a small private FE College for students with Learning/Emotional Difficulties and Learning Disabilities (including issues around substance misuse). Unfortunately I felt that I had to tender my resignation on 4 March 2003 as I found that the verbal and physical abuse perpetrated by the principal on both students and staff intolerable.
On leaving the college in Kent I returned to facilitate the Art Group @ 73a a drop in centre for clients with mental health issues (Bexhill on Sea) for ESCC Social Services and facilitated a arts developmental community education project for College of Arts and Technology as part of an East Sussex Learning Partnership research team exploring the problems and issues faced by marginalized social groups accessing Further Education.
2004: Community arts project for ‘Pulse’ (health awareness youth service project- centering around substance misuse).
2005: Invitation by Carr-Gomm, to meet (July 2005) and discuss an arts and education programme for their tenant’s participation involvement policy. This is an extension of the arts facilitation work I carried out in 1998/9.
2006: Organised independent Arts Festival for 73a Bexhill on Sea to run in conjunction with ‘Coastal Currents’- an official Arts Festival for the East Sussex Region- which this year was turned over to the private sector and whose entry fees had become prohibitive for our group to participate.
