| Your Personal Biography |
1951 Born in São Paulo.
1956 Enters the São Paulo Graded School. Mrs. Redding, his 2nd. Grade teacher, is the first person to recognise his artistic potential.
1961 After one year of private tutoring, enters Hildersham House School, at Broadstairs, England. His Art lessons are so boring that he loses interest in drawing or painting.
1965 Passes his common entrance exams to Rugby School, Rugby, England.
1966 Begins Art lessons at Rugby School, under Prof. Fabio Barraclough, who rekindles his passion for Art. Passes his 'O' Level exams. Begins studying for 'A' Levels in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
1967 Decides to go to College in the USA. Travels alone for interviews at Harvard, Swarthmore and Haverford, his choices of College. Takes his SAT exams in London.
1968 Is accepted at Haverford College, USA, where, after a year majoring in Mathematics, changes his major to Fine Arts, newly created department by Prof. Charles Stegeman. Takes courses in Art History at Bryn Mawr College, and Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
1969 Works during his Summer holidays at an advertising agency in São Paulo, which was later bought by Leo Burnett. He is offered a job as a creative director, but decides to return to the US.
1970 Under Prof. Paul Desjardins' initiative, participates in the creation of the Comfort Art Gallery, at Haverford College, inaugurated with an extensive retrospective of the work of William Blake (today those works are the basis of the Washington National Art Gallery's collection of Blake's work).
Exhibits at the Comfort Art Gallery, Haverford College, EUA (student show).
Decides to continue his studies and the development of his artistic work on his own in London, where he lives for 4 years. During this period, while drawing an average of 8 hours a day, also does some illustrations, and interprets, translates and helps Brazilian artists in London to show their work.
1973 The J.P.Lehmans Gallery at Grafton St. in the West End of London commissions two series of engravings and buys some works of his, and plans a One-man show exhibition.
1974 Returns to Brazil to marry Sonia Ozi. Because of the oil crisis, Jean-Pierre Lehmans leaves the gallery, which becomes JPL Gallery, working only with Old Masters. Decides to stay in São Paulo.
Studies engraving with Marcello Grassmann.
1975 First professional exhibition: 20 works at the Quarto Crescente Gallery, Lord Palace Hotel, São Paulo, in a group exhibition.
1976 First One-man show - André Art Gallery, São Paulo.
Signs a contract of national exclusivity with André Gallery de Arte de São Paulo, for 3 years.
1979 Travels to England, France and Morocco for five months.
1980 Organises the exhibition 'Contemporary Collection' SESC, Bertioga, São Paulo.
Studies metal engraving with Romildo Paiva.
1983 Begins teaching Art.
Hired as professor of drawing and painting by the Cultural Centre at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo, where he works until 1989.
1985 Leads the reorganisation of the Art courses committee at the Cultural Centre of the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo.
1990 Weekly appearance, presenting the Drawing Workshop, on the Revistinha programme, produced by TV Cultura of São Paulo, until end of 1991. The programme is awarded the São Paulo Critics' Association prize for best children's programme on television in 1988 and 1989.
Inaugurates his Art school, Hallawell Escola de Línguas e Artes.
1990 Is featured in the 'Who's Who In The World - X Edition', EUA, for his work as an Art Educator and artist.
Is featured in the 'Dictionary of International Biography' (22nd Edition), by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England.
Is featured in the'Who's Who of Intellectuals' by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England.
Begins to work as a lecturer.
1994 Editora Melhoramentos publishes his book À Mão Livre - A Linguagem do Desenho (Freehand - The Language of Drawing), now in its 16th reprint. The book was ranked 9th on the annual Folha de São Paulo Bestseller list (non-fiction).
Creates, writes the script and presents the 26-programme series À Mão Livre - A Linguagem do Desenho, based on his book, and recorded at the SENAI studios for TV Cultura; the series is shown for several years.
The Home Video À Mão Livre, by TV Cultura, is produced.
1995 TVE, Rede Brazil, begins to transmit, daily, the À Mão Livre series.
Transfers his studio and residence to Itu.
Writes his second book and TV series, about drawing techniques and materials.
1996 14th São Paulo Book Bienal: launches his second book, À Mão Livre 2 - Técnicas e Materiais de Desenho, (Ed. Melhoramentos), now in its 7th reprint.
Creates the CD-ROM, À Mão Livre - Drawing Workshop.
Inaugurates his homepage on the Internet http://www.cybermind.com.br/hallawell.
1997 Weekly appearance, presenting 'Fazendo Arte' in the programme 'Pra Você', with Claudette Troiano, TV Gazeta, São Paulo.
1998 Book published: Philip Hallawell apresenta O Grande Livro da Aquarela (Philip Hallawell presents the Encyclopaedia of Watercolour), by Hazel Harrison (Ed. Melhoramentos).
CD-ROM À Mão Livre - Drawing Workshop. (Ed. Melhoramentos)published.
2000 Begins teaching drawing and giving periodic watercolour, pastel and creativity workshops at the Casa do Restaurador, São Paulo.
2002 Develops and writes Aesthetics and Harmony for the Visagism Technical Course of the Beauty Technological Centre of SENAC-SP.
