Artist Statement for Patricia B. Sanborn

I studied art at Fairhaven College--Western Washington University, Washington State. This area is where unnumbered greens of creation hiccup textures across and through the pearl mists of winter rains and vibrantly whisper those colors into spring where can hide them until dawn kisses them awake! This is where the lightest shades of greens blanket the mountains down to the cool, blue waters' edges.
Here, new color rhythms shape and shift the lay of the land's shadows. Some colors and textures are very short lived. Hill and valley scenes travel through their life cycles quickly--to look away for a moment is to lose the visual transition of the colors and the textures into their next level of awe.
Therefore, I use many greens and blues in my paintings. I may not start out intentionally using those colors, but I tend to conclude my work with them. Another group of colors in my paintings include light creams, taupes, and whites misting and mingling in with the bright colors the way the mists weave in and out of the hills and trees--those mists that dance circles around the Northwest Mountains and bays.
Another important voice to me is Water. Its wonderful color shaping qualities I have not seen in other resources. If you have seen a sunrise or a sunset slice through waves breaking over a reef you know the rainbows that are borne there. That color birth, that energy, is what I thoroughly enjoy expressing in my larger works. That way, when you stand before the art, it wraps around you, it blankets you.
I studied basic art, drawing, painting, printmaking, screen printing, book arts, photography, art history, and sculpture at Fairhaven College in Western Washington University and Whatcom Community College. My teachers are active artists.
I have shown my art at local and regional shows: Whatcom Art Guild venues, Allied Art venues, Anacortes Arts Festival, Northwest Washington Fair.
