‘Lowanna’ an exhibition of Aboriginal beauty
Indigenous Artists Wayne Quilliam and Sasha Sarago will launch a unique photographic exhibition of artist nude photographs titled ‘Lowanna’ (Aboriginal for Beauty) at Tjanabi'.
It was inevitable that Wayne and Sasha would combine to create what is being touted as a world first when they explore the mystical world of Aboriginal culture and it’s association with land and nature in a style that celebrates the beauty of their culture and the female form. The concept of ‘Lowanna’ began when the two artists met several years ago when Wayne was shooting a calendar in Queensland and Sasha already a successful model discussed how there was a lack of Indigenous faces in mainstream modelling and media and how they believed their individual talents ‘combined’ could make a positive impact. They began shooting on the beach’s and rainforests of Far North Queensland using the natural colours and textures of the land, Sasha then moved to Melbourne and artistic influence has developed by using the images from throughout the country including sand textures from the central desert to the boab trees of the Kimberly’s.
“For more than 20 years I have travelled Australia working with rural and remote Aboriginal communities to photograph and record the stories the communities wanted to share and because I never grew up learning about my own culture these experiences have allowed me to develop my own sense of what being Aboriginal means. I have exhibited extensively in Europe, America, Australia and Asia to millions of people but this exhibition is the most important because it is the true reflection of my appreciation of how we as a culture are unique in the way we become brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles through an unspoken bond that is unorthodox and unexplainable, I believe Sasha and I are like brother/sister in many ways, her calmness and beauty offsets my brashness and it is evident in these photographs”.
