Artist Statement:
I intend to start a discussion about the paradox of how modern manmade structures reflect a desire to create a space that supports life, yet is destructive to the very biodiversity that fuels our existence. The use of mirror forces the viewer to see parts of themselves in a space that they would otherwise never occupy; a dilapidated landscape where environmental consciousness is absent. This emphasizes the collective effect of our actions as individuals which we often perceive as inconsequential to the environment. The abstraction of the original photographs through overlay and visible mirror reinforces the idea that sustainability is not an easily rectified issue with one obvious answer. The manner in which nature reclaims abandoned spaces is explored in the work through the juxtaposition of natural forms and rigidly geometric structures.

| Your Personal Biography |
Rachel Horner is an interdisciplinary artist residing in Baltimore, currently studying Art Education at Towson University. She is trained in the disciplines of traditional photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture. Her process begins with photographs of a documentary nature and evolves through the overlay of images or the translation of an idea across mediums. Her work explores issues surrounding sustainability by utilizing images of urban decay to illustrate how humans are responsible for the degradation of natural spaces. She is interested in the paradoxical beauty of nature reclaiming neglected structures and by the apathy with which dilapidated spaces are regarded. Rachel aims to spark a discussion about why these spaces exist in modern society.
