Artist Statement:
ABOUT MY WORK
(mixed mediums on cotton,
linen & papers)
The works shown stretch
across 30+ years of my
professional career. Some of
the paintings date from the
early 1980 up until the most
recent in 2006
(Paintings,drawings, screens,
window treatments). Where
indicated, by price, the works
are available for purchase.
Several of the works in public
collections are shown to give
an idea of the breadth and
range of my creative output.
I am open to commissions for
specific sites and enjoy
working collaboratively with
architectural, interior and
private designers.
Educated in Europe, the Far
East and the United States,
with degrees in philosophy,
language and music, I am
inclined in my paintings and
surface designs to work in a
serial manner, exploring a
single subject's broad color
and structural potential.
Firmly rooted in the material
world of wave and particle
physics and spiritually
inclined towards mysticism,
Eastern and Western
philosophies are merged into a
personal visual language. I
am currently drawn to
landscapes, however, "the
tenor of my painting is as
much a landscape of the soul
as that of place. Scenes
remembered and scenes invented
commingle like the smells, the
tastes and the textures of
memorable ...

Ray Pierotti,

BRIEF BIO/HISTORY
1932-1963 Born in Bountiful, Utah and educated in the Davis County public schools,
Pierotti evidenced, early in life, musical and visual artistic gifts. Following graduation from High School he entered the military and served two years in Korea and Japan. The experience informed his early artistic sensibilities.
Following the service he moved to France where he worked and completed his first undergraduate degree at La Sorbonne after which he returned to his native Utah and completed a BFA and MM at the University of Utah in musicology and music composition.
1963-1977 Moved to New York City where he supported his career as a painter by teaching at the New York School of Visual Arts, Assistant Director of the American Craft Museum and Director of national programs for the American Craft Council. Had his first solo exhibitions in New York’s Sawdust Gallery followed by exhibitions at the South Carolina Museum of Art, the Hunter Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museum at the University of Idaho plus inclusion in numerous group shows throughout the USA.
1977-1987 Accepted the directorship of The Arrowmont School, coupled with an
associate professorship at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His exhibition schedule included the University of the South, Fairfax Art Academy, Morristown Art Center and numerous solo exhibitions in private galleries. Appointed as Chair of the Dept. of Fine and Performing Arts at SCCC he moved to Michigan. He was later invited to open up and direct the Sawtooth School of Visual Arts in Winston-Salem with solo exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Greenhill Center for the Arts along with additional solo and group exhibitions throughout the Southeastern US.
1987- 2010 Invited to open the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts in North Georgia and
later directed The International Museum of Art & Design (now called MODA), he moved his studio to Atlanta where he currently resides. His larger studio is located in Shellman, Georgia. His list of solo exhibitions in private galleries and museums along with corporate and public commissions has led to a successful career as an independent studio artist. He is currently developing a community Art and Healing Center in Shellman, GA. Each
year he leads 2-3 hands-on workshops in his unique artistic technique.
He is catalogued in the Archives of American Art and listed in Who’s Who in International Art & Design. Over 700 of his works are included in over 280 Corporate, Private and Public collections throughout the USA, South America, Europe and the Far East. Throughout his long career he has served on numerous national, regional, state and city foundation boards. He currently serves on the Boards of the Southeastern Fiber Arts Alliance & The World Batik Council. He has art reps in Armenia, Scotland, Switzerland and the US.
