Artist Statement
Rebecca Ramsey
My recent painting, Kaleidoscopic, is my most genuine example of where I intend to take my paintings by means of style and subject matter. The pink under painting of her hair was part of my desire to explore and use colour to portray a sense of bent reality. The twisted branches are tipped with multicoloured autumn leaves and shrouded with wide staring eyes that embody the surrealistic aspect of the subject’s environment. By mixing the substances the worlds of dream and reality, a reflection of the subconscious is established. I feel that this painting was a critical turning point for my portrayal of people in their environment and my creative process. It was John Lennon’s “Lucy in the sky with Diamonds,” which inspired me to experiment with her eyes and use the whole spectrum of colour so that she appears to have “kaleidoscope eyes.” However the song isn’t an explanation for the painting in its entirety, as its significance goes in other directions besides Lennon’s lyrics.
