Artist Statement:
To explain my work would be near impossible. It would almost be like asking a person to rationalize the intensity of a given emotion, like fear or rage. I know that I just do it, however it comes out, and I filter the ‘unpleasantness’ thereafter. When I work, I do so with such focused dedication, and all my energy is poured into the process. The work deserves no less. It is a very powerful force, pulling me back in and consuming me, time and time again. I become but a mere tool for what needs to happen on the canvas or paper on any given day. I become selfless, abiding to the hegemony that is painting.
Yet this energy is triggered by important factors which lead me to paint; Memories, some sorrowful, some happy; everyday experiences, relationships with people and with things. I work from life, but am never enslaved by it. I am fascinated by the shapes, lines and chaos found in nature. As the painting unfolds, it often finds itself at a balanced stage between faithfulness to what is seen, and abstracted shapes that are necessary to the wholeness of the piece.
